When I came back to Malaysia for a visit in 2024, one of my friends asked me, "Naz, what did you learn abroad?"

I wasn't sure how to answer her question back then. I just gave a surface-level answer like, "I learn this and that culture, the people, the community, the social norms", which is all true...

But if you asked me now the same question, I think I'd have a different answer.

The biggest lesson I learned by moving abroad is this:

Learning how to define myself beyond all the things that I have ever known.

Beyond just what I do for work, my career, my friends, my family, my environment, the food I eat, the places I go, the people I met, the activities I do, the events I attend.

Because when you move abroad, you're stripping yourself of ALL the things you ever knew and were familiar with.

So beyond all of the above, the question that you have to ask yourself is:

"Who are you, really?"

It took me a while to even begin to find the answer.

I can't say I’ve fully found it yet, but bit by bit, I’m learning how to define who I am when the familiar things are gone.

So, why am I telling you this?

Because for the longest time, I thought building a 'personal brand' was about performing a version of myself that people wanted to see.

But I was wrong.

When you’ve been stripped of everything familiar, you realize that your brand isn't what you do, it's the perspective you carry.

In a world full of "carefully curated" online personalities, the only thing that actually stays is your authentic self.

But you can’t share that self if you haven’t done the work to define it first.

Building a personal brand is a journey of self-discovery.

It’s about having the courage to say, 'This is who I am beyond the surface,' and seeing who resonates toward that.

Once you know who you are, it's easier to show up more authentically rather than feeling like you always have to "perform" for an audience that you barely know.

Tell me, if someone asks you "Who are you?" right now..what would your answer be?

Feel free to reply to this email. Always love reading your replies!

See you soon, inshallah
