I love writing online and building an audience.
But if I’m being completely transparent with you, I also have a hidden agenda 👀
I want to build real, recurring online income. Yeppp, I want to make money!
But after 5 years of content creation, I hit a wall.
I felt like a hamster on a wheel and trapped in a cycle of churning out content non-stop just so that I stay relevant, be in the favor of algorithms, and getting noticed so people hire me or buy from me.
That’s when I realized I need to change the way I approach content:
So I stopped creating temporary content and start building more sustainable digital assets instead.
If you're wondering, what exactly are digital assets?
Think of it like having a property unit that you turn into an Airbnb, and it brings you income from renters or tourists.
Similar to that, but in the online space.
Here is how I'm building mine:
1) A website that you own
Having a website allows you to create, write, and sell your digital products without the limitation of being on platforms.
Social media platforms are like rented land, but your website is your digital home.
For instance, on my website (nazwrites.com), I'm writing articles while also selling my digital products, which I can build once and sell multiple times.
Having an email list counts too! 💌
Marketplaces already have millions of people actively searching to buy, which means you don't always have to bring your own audience.
I started an Etsy shop selling digital templates, and every month, it brings me a couple of hundred Ringgit automatically (Alhamdulillah!)
There are also other Etsy shops selling physical items like vintage decor or printables.
The key is tapping into existing search demand 🔍
I'm still new to this, but this kind of work genuinely brings me peace and fun because I get to be creative without the high pressure of managing direct client work.
3) Digital offers tied to social media
While building your personal brand and creating content, you SHOULD be able to monetize directly instead of just waiting for brand deals, partnerships, or client work.
And believe me when I said this: You don't need a massive audience to make an income; you just need a targeted offer that solves a specific pain point.
For example, I only have 4k followers on Threads and 500 on Instagram, but I’ve still managed to sell to over 200 customers!
What I did was... I just pinned my digital products to my profile and wrote posts that point back to them.
Don't just create content for the sake of "creating content", but build multiple assets that can bring you income.
But Naz, where is "copywriting" in all of these?
Everything I listed above requires knowledge of marketing, copywriting, and consumer psychology.
So if you already have this knowledge, building your digital assets should be a no-brainer step!
There's nothing wrong with offering services to businesses (freelancing), or accepting brand deals and partnerships. You can still do these.
But having your own digital assets helps to diversify your income and gives you more autonomy.
This way, you're not putting all eggs in one basket.
