If you were born before 2000, I think you would have experienced the analog world.
Today's email is a bit different from what I usually send, but...I feel like this topic is still very close to us, especially the "social media people."
I was among the generation that got to experience handwritten letters, dial-up internet, landline phone, physical cards for every occasion - and remembering everyone's addresses and phone numbers while still having very thick phonebooks! ๐
I still remember calling my friends on a landline, and my parents would remind me every single time to speak politely by introducing myself first.
"Hi Assalamualaikum. Saya Nazurah, boleh saya bercakap dengan (my friend's name)?"
Back then, everyone memorized each other's phone numbers and we took pride in it.
We would send handwritten letters to friends who had moved far away from us. We’d send birthday cards and Raya cards during Ramadan too!
We'd send cards for literally every occasion ๐
Even when you got into a fight with your friend, you would send a "Sorry, friends" card. Or if not, a long handwritten sorry letter.
Postal services were a huge deal back then. Online shopping wasn’t popular yet.
Instead, we were so used to sending letters and postcards that some of us (including me!) even had huge collections of stamps. ๐
I don’t know why, but analog interaction felt very intentional.
It required effort, which made us treat every single interaction as something truly meaningful.
But today…social media has taken over...
And I feel like it has changed the way we connect, as well as the dynamics of friendships and relationships.
It seems like our closeness is now measured by whether or not we follow our friends on social media, whether or not we watch their IG stories, and whether or not we like their pictures or send them DMs.
Which, to be honest, feels like a very surface-level connection.
You can love your friends with all your heart, but your content might not be for them, and vice versa.
Especially these days, a lot of people have started to treat content as their creative outlet (which is a good thing btw!), a place where they share their perspectives and worldviews to connect with like-minded people.
However, the friends we have, the ones we have always loved, may not necessarily resonate with that content or topics.
Not everyone we love (and want to stay connected with) shares the same "niche" as us.
And with social media friendships, it feels a bit complicated. Some connections hardly survive due to differences in interests, niches, political stances, and so many other things.
What if we brought back handwritten letters... sending them to the people we truly want to keep in touch with, completely free from the pressure of social media?
We could have different views on things or not share the same niche, without it affecting our friendship.
We could just share how our lives are going in that moment, right there in a beautifully written letter โ๏ธ
I truly miss the old times, especially how we connected back then, how friendships were formed, and how intentional we all were about staying in touch.
Let me know...does any of this bring you down memory lane?
If not, I'm probably just too old ๐

Wait a sec, here are some ways I can support you ๐ค โคต๏ธ
